Connectivity FAQ’s
What is Ethernet and is it really that different from Broadband?
Ethernet is delivered over fibre, straight into your premises. Unlike fibre broadband, an Ethernet connection is not shared with others, it is dedicated to you. Ethernet is also syncronous, which means that your upload speed is the same as your download speed. For example, 1Gbps download / 1Gbps Upload.
What is ADSL, FTTC and FTTP Broadband?
FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) is fibre optic from the local Exchange to the green box in the street. However, the connection from the green box to your premises is copper. Common download speeds for FTTC are around 80Mbps but this can go up to around 300Mbps depending on what technology is available near you. Due to the 2025 ‘big switch off’, unless requested, we are supplying ‘naked’ FTTC Broadband where you won’t be able to have a traditional telephone service on the line. Instead you can opt for a modern voice service such as our hugely popular Cloud Voice. The benefits of our Naked Broadband are faster install times and a slightly lower cost.
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), otherwise known as Full Fibre, is delivered over fibre all the way from the local exchange. No copper at all! Download speeds are up to 1Gbps but Upload speeds are generally not syncronous, like Ethernet. Whilst availability is still low, FTTP will become the standard as we move towards the mid-2020’s.
